What the results mean
Low risk: most likely everyday condensation. What you describe sounds like moisture from cooking, washing and drying clothes settling on cold surfaces. It is common and usually fixable without building work.
Worth checking: something is feeding the damp. There are signs of more than everyday condensation. It could be a ventilation problem, a leak or water getting in from outside. Caught now, the fix is usually smaller.
Act soon: damp is damaging the building. Salts, crumbling plaster or a tide mark suggest water has been in the wall for a while. Left alone, it spreads to plaster, decorations and timber.
Urgent: get it looked at this week. Your answers point to serious, long-standing damp, possibly with timber decay or a health risk at home. This needs a proper inspection quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not for certain. It points you in the right direction, but telling rising damp from penetrating damp or condensation needs moisture readings and a look at the outside of the building.
Report the damp to your landlord in writing, with photos and dates. Social landlords in England must now investigate significant damp and mould within 10 working days (GOV.UK: Awaab's Law guidance for social landlords, MHCLG, 2025).
